Boost Metabolism, Enhance Endurance, and Burn More Fat

What if you could increase your resting energy expenditure so you burn more calories throughout the day? What if there were a supplement scientifically proven to help you burn fat for fuel, enhance endurance, and lean out?

PROGENEX Burn: Boost Your Metabolism, Enhance Endurance, and Burn More Fat

We all know that a healthy metabolism is key to maintaining or achieving a lean physique and enjoying more energy. While some of us recall the days when no amount of pizza, pie, or potato chips seemed to have any effect on our waistlines at all, a sad truth eventually sets in: Once we reach the age of 20, those days become nothing more than a fading memory as our metabolism takes a nosedive.

Others of us were cursed with a slow metabolism from Day 1 and no amount of exercise, lettuce wraps, or starved afternoons seemed to trim us down or shape us up. And to add insult to injury, it’s only getting worse!

Whichever camp you fit in, you’re ready to “burn” like never before. And PROGENEX is ready to help.

The Truth About REE

Resting energy expenditure (REE) refers to the number of calories your body burns while at rest in order to maintain homeostasis. It’s a variable system that fluctuates to accommodate your level of activity – essentially, those who are more active enjoy a higher metabolic rate. But exercise as much as you may, REE represents the majority (60-70%!) of your total energy output. And starting at age 20, your REE declines at a rate of as much as 2% per decade.

Why the decrease in REE? Amid other contributing factors, declining thyroid function, loss of lean muscle mass, reduced metabolic activity in lean tissue, and the cessation of bone growth and development all cause older to people burn fewer calories at rest than younger people (granted, individual rates vary considerably). The go-to response has been to simply eat less as you age in hopes of dampening the effects of a slowed metabolism. But there’s a major flaw with this approach: Studies show that caloric restriction can actually result in significantly less physical activity (you don’t have the energy to exercise!). Decreased physical activity results in less lean muscle and a slower metabolic rate (if you provide your body fewer calories to function, evolution has taught your body to adapt by cutting its allocation of energy across your entire system in order to survive the “famine!”). Less fat-torching lean muscle and a slower metabolic rate result in weight gain. Weight gain can lead to more caloric restriction. And the cycle continues to spiral downward – or upward, if we’re talking the numbers that show on your scale.

The Thermogenic Conundrum

The search for solutions to increase REE isn’t new. In fact, clinicians and researchers have already discovered several therapeutic agents that have shown impressive results at up-regulating thermogenesis. Unfortunately, many of the most effective treatments have proven to be the least safe. Consider the use of amphetamines that work by stimulating the central nervous system to release hormones like epinephrine and norepinephrine which effectively decrease appetite and raise metabolic rate – but come with a high potential for dependency. In an attempt to avoid negative side effects, people have turned to botanical medicines and plant-derived substances like Green Tea, Psyllium, Kelp, and others. Unfortunately, the science behind these products varies wildly with some reporting safe and efficacious results and others reporting very few substantiated claims.

The most promising and well-researched botanically derived metabolism booster is found in chili peppers. The chili pepper compound known as capsaicin is what gives peppers their “hotness” but also boasts significant positive effects when it comes to shedding body fat: Studies show that long-term intake can increase fat oxidation and increase REE. What’s more, newer studies show that capsaicin may also aid in suppressing your appetite, particularly during prolonged periods of burning more calories than you take in.

So, why aren’t we all downing bucketloads of chili peppers every day? Well, not only would it send many of us screaming to the fridge frantically searching for a gallon of milk to stop the burning, capsaicin can also contribute to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. And if you’re a little overweight already and battling hypertension, that’s the last thing you need.

Therein lies the rub.

Dihydrocapsiate: Hot or Not?

What if you could get all of the benefits of the spicy little compound capsaicin without the pungent pitfalls? Turns out, you can.

Looking deeper into the bioactive compounds of chili peppers, a group of Japanese investigators discovered substances produced by certain strains of chili peppers that are structurally similar to capsaicin but fortuitously different in certain regards. Known as capsinoids, these substances stimulate thermogenesis and lipolysis (increase energy expenditure and fat melting) but are approximately 1,000 times less hot than capsaicin! Additionally, as they pass through the GI tract, capsinoids are hydrolyzed and converted into inactive conjugates that pose no threat of causing systemic side effects – no accelerated heart rate, no elevated blood pressure, no problem.

PROGENEX Burn includes an effective amount of the capsinoid known as dihydrocapsiate. Like capsaicin, when dihydrocapsiate enters your mouth, it stimulates certain receptors that trigger a response within your sympathetic nervous system and sets off three principal mechanisms of action:

  1. Up-regulation of UCP-3 (Mitochondrial Uncoupling Protein-3) in muscle cells: This causes ATP production independent of what’s occurring in the mitochondria and releases the energy as heat. An identical process happens during caloric restriction as a means to economize energy. So, in other words, this action gives you the benefits of caloric restriction without actually reducing calories.
  2. Up-regulation of UCP-1 (Uncoupling Protein-1, aka Thermogenin). This protein is only found in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and is used by your body to generate non-shivering thermogenesis as a means to protect against hypothermia. In other words, larger numbers of calories are converted into heat, meanwhile reducing deposits of white (undesirable) fat.
  3. Hydrolysis of triglycerides into glycerol plus three fatty acids. Essentially, the dihydrocapsiates stimulate the breaking down of fat into a form your body can readily use as sources of energy during exercise while delaying the oxidation of muscle and glycogen. This means, you can hang onto quick energy reserves for when you need them later, significantly enhancing your endurance.

PROGENEX Burn is delivered in the form of “pop rocks” so the compound has sufficient time to reach the receptors in your mouth that trigger your sympathetic nervous system to ultimately set off the above desired mechanisms of action.

Unlike capsaicin, dihydrocapsiates stimulate receptors that aren’t responsible for detecting thermal heat. So when it comes to burning up fat, these compounds are hot. But when it comes to burning your mouth off, they’re not.

Burn Fat For Fuel

Your body draws energy from nutrients to perform. But which nutrients are used and when gives rise to different efficiencies. PROGENEX Burn helps your body break down fat into a readily available source for fuel rather than muscle-bound glycogen as is typical during endurance exercise. Burn fat for fuel rather than muscle glycogen stores? Yes, please. Aside from the obvious benefits of trimming down, this shift in energy utilization also enables you to go harder, longer.

Mice Swimming

In one particular study, one group of mice was given an effective amount of Burn’s active ingredient and forced to swim to exhaustion. Another group was given nothing. The mice who took the capsiate were able to swim significantly longer before exhaustion set in – 10 minutes longer or a 25% increase in swim time! (See Figure 6 below.) The study also reported the following:

After 30 minutes swimming, the residual glycogen in the gastrocnemius muscle (located in the calf of the leg) was higher, as was the serum free fatty acid concentration. Further to these, the lactic acid concentration was significantly lower; meaning the mice were able to avoid reaching the lactic acid threshold for a longer period of time.

Mice Running

The same group of researchers continued the study by placing mice on a treadmill for 60 minutes of running. The group who took PROGENEX Burn’s active ingredient showed enhanced fat oxidation and decreased utilization of carbohydrates (See Figure 7 below). Additionally, they “experienced a reduction in anaerobic respiration in favor of aerobic respiration by sparing muscle glycogen stores.” As in the swimming experiment, the group test group also showed a significant reduction in lactic acid accumulation.
On top of more endurance due to the efficient shift in energy utilization, multiple human studies also show that lactic acid accumulation may significantly lessen when sufficient capsiate is taken. So, while PROGENEX Burn may produce obvious fat-burning benefits to those seeking to shed a few pounds, it’s also intended for the serious athlete looking to enhance endurance and spare precious glycogen reserves while delaying his or her lactic acid threshold.

To summarize, PROGENEX Burn is formulated to increase your resting energy expenditure so you burn more calories throughout the day. Additionally, Burn’s active ingredient, a compound called dihydrocapsiate found in specific strains of sweet peppers, has shown throughout more than 50 research publications to effectively increase fat oxidation, shift the body’s energy utilization from carbohydrates to fat in order to spare precious glycogen reserves, and reduce anaerobic respiration in favor of aerobic respiration to significantly enhance your endurance and performance.

Don’t let your declining metabolic rate get you down and quit burning out before you’re really done. Stoke the fire inside with PROGENEX Burn and start accessing the energy you need to live well, train tough, and play hard.

  • This product is fantastic! I purchased it the day it came out. It has amplified my workouts and I get more boost when I am training. Its like turning on the after-burners. I can go longer without fatigue. Additionally, there are no jitters with this product. Just make sure you let the pop-rocks melt in your mouth before swallowing. I forcibly melt them in my mouth. Thanks again to the Progenex team for another great product!
